Darwin’s hawk moth

The large, brown moth lived only in Madagascar. It had an 11-inch-long tongue. It could fly 30 miles per hour and hover like a hummingbird.

Today, this insect is called “Darwin’s hawk moth.” With its huge wings buzzing, the moth hovers in front of the flower. Its long proboscis uncoils. The tongue probes the orchid’s spur, dipping deeper until it finds the nectar at the bottom. The proboscis and spur make the perfect fit that Charles Darwin predicted.
